A few weeks ago, the perpetually hysterical gals over at Abortion, Every Day celebrated a video of a woman screaming obscenities at a peaceful pro-life advocate who stood praying outside an abortion facility.

Jessica Valenti, the operation’s chief grouser, offered her own charming theological reflection. In her belief system, she declared, every time someone screams filth and abuse at a pro-lifer, an angel gets its wings.

Such depth. Such grace. Thomas Aquinas can rest easy.

Valenti and her sycophants had no objection to screaming, profanity, intimidation, or public humiliation. Those acts apparently qualify as sacred rituals when directed at people who oppose the shredding of unborn babies.

But now their hackles are up, because they have encountered something that sends them into a full-blown panic: police officers pray. Oh, the humanity.

Cue the outrage. Fetch the smelling salts. Clutch the pearls and alert the authorities, although apparently not the Boulder Police Department.

Valenti’s latest complaint concerns officers who responded after staff at the RISE Collective abortion business raised concerns about pro-life advocates outside the building. The police investigated the social media post that prompted the complaint and spoke with both the abortion profiteer’s employees and the pro-life advocates to protect everyone’s rights and safety. They found nothing that violated the law.

As the officers prepared to leave, the advocates asked whether they could offer a general prayer for the officers’ safety. The officers agreed. Then they left, but not before one of the abortion ghouls took a picture of the pro-lifers praying for the police.

That is the scandal. That is the cause of consternation worthy of an entire blog post, a shrill cry, and another onset of pro-abortion hysteria.

Let’s be clear – there were no arrests. No violence. No crime. No conspiracy. Just citizens praying for police officers who perform a dangerous job.

Valenti calls this “downright irresponsible.” Of course she does. The woman supports abortion up to birth.

In the moral universe of Abortion, Every Day, screaming obscenities at a praying Christian earns an angel its wings. But pray for a police officer, and suddenly democracy is smoldering, the republic is in ruins, and the Constitution has fled the scene. The contradiction could not expose itself more clearly.

Valenti does not object to hostility. She objects to whom the hostility targets. She does not oppose intimidation as a principle. She celebrates it when abortion supporters direct it at pro-lifers. What she cannot tolerate is the sight of police officers treating peaceful pro-life advocates as human beings rather than caricatures marked for suspicion.

She finds simple civility intolerable because her entire narrative depends on portraying every pro-lifer as dangerous. Every defender of life as vile. It’s who they are.

There is another fact Valenti glides past. RISE Collective does not operate as an ordinary medical office. The facility openly advertises abortions through 34 weeks of pregnancy. That places its work well into the third trimester. Its own website describes abortion care “later in pregnancy,” while its service page states that it performs abortions up to 34 weeks.

Thirty-four weeks – approaching the 8th month of pregnancy. At that stage, the child has developed for nearly eight months. The abortion facility uses clinical language to sanitize what happens, but no polished website can erase the child, or the bloody and painful and gruesome end that baby will face in the RISE Collective.

There is no universe in which ending the life of a third-trimester baby qualifies as normal.

It is extreme. It should trouble the conscience. It should provoke grief. It should lead decent people to prayer.

Why would Valenti feel astonished that police officers might stand respectfully while Christians pray outside such a place? Why would anyone find it shocking that normal human beings, once they understand what occurs inside an abortion facility that ends pregnancies through 34 weeks, might turn toward God?

Prayer represents one of the most human responses imaginable to horror, and what happens in that place is abject horror.

Valenti sees fanaticism because she must. She has to; if not, her bloodied and skewed worldview crumbles.

She cannot allow her readers to consider the child. She cannot allow them to ask what an abortion at 30, 32, or 34 weeks entails. She must keep the focus on protesters, police officers, photographs, tone, access, and alleged threats.

Anything but the baby.

That omission defines abortion advocacy. Its loudest champions spend thousands of words discussing abortion while carefully avoiding the human being abortion kills.

RISE Collective calls itself an “all-trimester” clinic. Abortion supporters use that phrase as though trimesters represent product categories. First trimester. Second trimester. Third trimester. Choose the service that applies.

But the third trimester does not describe an abstraction. It describes a child.

Valenti wants police officers to view the people praying outside as threats. She appears far less troubled by the macabre business inside, a business that specializes in ending the lives of children late in pregnancy.

The officers acted professionally. They investigated the complaint. They found no unlawful conduct. They spoke with both sides. They protected constitutional rights. When citizens asked to pray for their safety, they accepted the kindness.

Valenti cannot stand it. It makes her seethe in disbelief.

The photograph showed what her propaganda tries to conceal. Pro-life advocates are not monsters. They are people moved by conscience, praying outside a facility where children are dismembered.

No wonder she wants the picture stripped of context, because the context is devastating.
